I’ve been doing some digging around my old electronic self to get reminders on some favourite gigs/albums/culture of past years so I can post a little decade round up of my faves, there has been so much that I need reminding of what was when.  Now, as an aside, I know this may seem late but I don’t know how people find the time to do this sort of thing before the year/decade is actually out…that’s what January is for!

So anyway, this research has consisted of searching old emails (frequently do end-of-year Top 5′s with mates) and blogs which basically =myspace. Pre-”stranded” I was over there on old myspace, circa 2006/2007 getting introduced to blogging that way.  Funny how quickly I migrated to facebook- seems like it was spring/summer 2007- and started ignoring myspace. Anyhow – decided to copy and paste the blogs from myspace in here with their original post dates so that I have them in one place. I’ve tagged them all as myspace archive in case anyone is so inclined as to want to browse them. It’s the same sort of chat I do here really, music, culture, things to get to, reviews of things gotten to by me. I should really delete the myspace account outright- like the many millions that are being haemorrhaged from the platform in the past year- but I can’t bear to delete it fully just yet….soon, soon.

I think I am devoid of the right sort of describy words for dan deacon last night…but it was so awesome (never has the american word seemed so apt before) that I feel honour bound to say something…so this will be rambly and nonsensical, but hell, the gig is non-sensical too.

Dan Deacon is mad, mental, absurd, bizzare, brilliant and above all deadly, deadly deadly! I had him up for a gig in the Model last night and he exceeded all expectations. Anyone who knows about Dan Deacon will know the deal- he sets up a table of junk in the middle of the room and gets the audience right up close and round him. In sligo we have this black box theatre space which is perfect for nights like this, so he set himself up dead centre and got plugged in, green skull and everything.

Trying to get a sligo crowd going is a tough one, but he did it, with bells on. Something of a live wizard, Dan pretty much conducts a big group workshop…he starts with stretching (as all good workouts must be preceded), and soon the class are beckoning and blowing kisses to strangers , pretending to be horses, busting their moves in a dance off (which chester totally won, but I think he might have had lots of practice) and finishing up all choir like with big out-loud singing of ‘wham city’…

I have never ever seen so many smily happy adults in one room in all my life. It was like everyone was a kid again, totally uninhibited, unselfconscious, giddy, playful and loving it. It was one big inclusive party and I think everyone had a bit of a life experience going on by the end of it.

I love it. This is art. This is what real art is supposed to be about- changing expectations, moving people and having full on, out of the ordinary experiences. That he was part of the Warhol music season was perfect….I see a flicker of the same “kid-on-christmas-morning” smile on grown ups faces when they encounter Warhol’s silver clouds…total cheeky anticipation.

okay, that’s about as much as can put into words. It’s not really describable. Encounter dan deacon where ever you can. Go forth and experienc

hmmm…have been neglecting myspace almost totally of late. Just finding facebook a lot easier and less prone to random musician adds or “congratulations you’ve WON” flashing banners. I’m sure that will all end once it is sold off to a mega corp for a billion $ in the not so distant future but there you go, for now it’s just lovely. and the interface is only deadly. that said there are still loads of folks not on there and i’d forgotton all about their myspace selves, so i’m back a little bit.

In a major mini depression post EP. As always one of the best weekends of the year and coming back down to real life earth with work and life and routine is just so dreary and upsetting. Seriously considering running away with the circus.

thanks to a crazy dawn patrol arrival we got pitched in a sweet spot and had an outstanding weekend. Got to way more actual gigs this year, which is deadly but also got me all tuckered out from all the racing about in wellies. Must have walked MILES.

Lots of highlights and no really bad gigs, but the definte outstanding ones were !!! (i heard they were good live but holy fuck, that was a lot of strutting for 4pm on a saturday avo. We lost our collective minds with all the screaming and the jumping about), Nouvelle Vague ( the melodrama, the singing, the big gay dancing, the great great crowd), Donal Dineen’s legendary set at Body n Soul on Sat night which swept from improv-ing with Liam O’Maonlai to a closing ” Under Pressure”. incredible. Best end to the best day of the year). Loved Ratatat, Spilly Walker and Fujiya and Miyagi too. Caught a few things on the main stage but I find it hard to get the vibe going on up there. Bjork, Hot Chip and LCD Sound System did a great job trying though.

Best out of gig highlights included the group photo takers at Nouvelle Vague (“will you take a pic of all of us please” “Great, now you get in” repeated ad infinitum, wish i knew who’s camera it was), the total unknown lost little man that we found sleeping in our tent (bit of a Goldilocks moment made all the funnier that the sme thing happened to us with a different stranger last year, what are the odds?), the wind-up phone charger, the swing chairs, Piemaster, Body and Soul all day every day, Spiderman, the Leprachauns, the womble-ing of redeemable cups (saw a delighted teenage couple work out that they had just made 90EUR on litter collecting), isolated rain showers inside the Electric Arena tent for Beastie Boys on Sun, the flock of balloons racing across the sky on sunday afternoon, and all the deadly deadly people i love the most that i got to hang out with all weekend. Didn’t like not getting into Modest Mouse (why oh why were they on such a tiny stage? stupid stupid stupid) but i’ll have to forgive the picnic that one discretion.
